Krueger Transit Consulting Awarded $1 Million DOE Grant to Lead Hydrogen Infrastructure and Safety Advancement in New York State

New York, NY – Krueger Transit Consulting (KTC), a leader in sustainable transportation and hydrogen infrastructure, is thrilled to announce the receipt of a $1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) as part of the DE-FOA-0003213 funding opportunity. The grant supports the Empowering Hydrogen Futures: Advancing Permitting, Safety, and Deployment Strategies for Sustainable Hydrogen Infrastructure project. Led by KTC this initiative will focus on addressing critical barriers to hydrogen deployment, improving regulatory frameworks, and advancing hydrogen safety protocols across New York State and will allow the largest transit agency in North America, The Metropolitan Transportation Authority with a fleet of 6,800 buses to expand their hydrogen bus deployments.

In partnership with an esteemed group of organizations, including Empire Clean Cities, Clean Communities of Central New York, James Baldwin Outdoor Learning Center (JBOLC), Energetics, The Center for Hydrogen Safety (CHS), Air Liquide, The Metropolitan Transportation Authority, Central New York Regional Transportation Authority (CENTRO), Rochester-Genesee Regional Transportation Authority (RGRTA), and the Relief Access Program for The Bronx (RAP4BRONX) the project aims to significantly streamline hydrogen project permitting. Currently, permitting can take months or even years in some cases, particularly in New York City where liquid hydrogen installations are not allowed, and fuel cell vehicles face restrictions. This effort will reduce permitting timelines while pushing for policy reforms that allow for liquid hydrogen installations in NYC and access for fuel cell vehicles on key infrastructure like the George Washington Bridge leading to carbon reductions in the largest US city, NY City a population of nearly 9 million people. This grant award is groundbreaking as it advances the potential for MTA to go hydrogen which is the largest municipal fleet in the world.

The project will deliver two key outcomes:

  1. Enabling Technology Deployments: KTC and its partners will tackle the regulatory and economic barriers that slow the adoption of hydrogen and fuel cell technologies to enable carbon reductions. This involves developing policies to streamline permitting processes, reducing both the time and costs associated with hydrogen deployment, and enhancing the overall infrastructure needed to support zero-emission vehicles.

  2. Raising Awareness and Ensuring Safety: Through educational outreach, the project will engage policymakers, transportation agencies, and community groups to foster support for hydrogen technologies. The effort will focus particularly on urban centers, transportation corridors, and environmental justice zones, promoting hydrogen’s potential to reduce emissions and improve air quality. Additionally, safety training for first responders and hydrogen system operators will ensure that hydrogen technologies are deployed safely.

Sydney Krueger, Principal Investigator of KTC, emphasized, “This initiative promises to bring multiple benefits to New York State, including a significant reduction in carbon emissions, enhanced safety measures, accelerated deployment of hydrogen-based zero-emission vehicles, and community empowerment through outreach and education. This project represents a critical step forward in making hydrogen a core component of New York’s clean energy future. The estimated yearly carbon emissions reduction if all New York city vehicles transitioning to hydrogen vehicles would result in approximately 11.5 million metric tons of CO2 reductions annually. This is a truly groundbreaking achievement, showcasing the incredible potential of hydrogen infrastructure. Our collaborative approach will not only accelerate hydrogen technology deployments but will also ensure the safe, equitable, and sustainable integration of hydrogen across the state’s transportation and energy sectors.

This project directly aligns with New York State’s ambitious goal to reduce carbon emissions by 85% by 2050, as part of the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA). By addressing the emissions of the transportation sector, one of the largest contributors to greenhouse gases, KTC is not just participating but leading the charge in transforming New York's energy landscape. The sheer scale of this initiative will significantly improve air quality, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable future for all New Yorkers and create a replicable model across the US.

Krueger Transit Consulting (KTC) is proud to be at the forefront of such an unprecedented and impactful project. With a proven track record of driving forward zero-emission technology and hydrogen deployment, KTC’s expertise and vision are unmatched in the field. Our team’s ability to blend cutting-edge innovation with practical implementation is what sets us apart, allowing us to lead transformative initiatives that will shape the future of sustainable transportation not just in New York, but nationwide."

U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm congratulated KTC and its partners, stating, “These investments in clean hydrogen showcase the Administration’s commitment to making clean energy a win-win for all Americans—by contributing to a sustainable zero-carbon future, while boosting economic opportunities across the country. These projects will work hand in hand with historic investments in the Hydrogen Hubs and electrolysis technologies to accelerate progress towards a clean hydrogen economy that will deliver good-paying, high-quality jobs and accelerate a renaissance of American manufacturing.”

Dr. Sunita Satyapal, Director of the DOE’s Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office, added, “The success of our regional clean hydrogen hubs—and the national clean hydrogen strategy—hinges in large part on advances in technology that will grow clean hydrogen’s economic potential. At the same time, we need to ensure that siting and permitting are done in the safest, most efficient way possible as hydrogen infrastructure expands across domestic markets. By identifying ways to address siting and permitting challenges, these projects will complement other large-scale investments in clean hydrogen by the Biden-Harris administration and will play a vital role in contributing to our nation’s clean energy future.”
